Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe the approach to a patient with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) presenting with difficult or challenging behaviors
  2. List methods useful in screening for behavioral conditions in ASD
  3. Explain the challenges of using behavioral medications for patients with ASD
  4. Describe the clinical approach to a patient with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  5. Apply strategies regarding the titration and dosing of medications for the treatment of co-occurring ADHD and ASD
  6. List the main side effects of stimulants and non-stimulants, especially as seen in patients with ASD
  7. Describe the clinical approach to a patient with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and anxiety
  8. Apply strategies regarding the titration and dosing of medications for the treatment of co-occurring anxiety and ASD
  9. List the main side effects of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, especially as seen in patients with ASD
  10. Describe the clinical approach to a patient with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and irritability
  11. Apply strategies regarding the titration and dosing of medications for the treatment of co-occurring irritability and ASD
  12. List the main side effects of atypical antipsychotics, especially as seen in patients with ASD
