Overview

This educational activity provides an overview of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in women from the Veteran’s Administration’s perspective and looks at the dilemma of Broken Heart Syndrome (Takotsubo cardiomyopathy or Takotsubo Syndrome) and why it is more prevalent in women and examines the policy recommendations developed by the Right Care Initiative Women’s Writing Group now published in Clinical Cardiology. The live lecture for this recording took place May 9, 2022.

Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 1.0 Medical Knowledge MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine's (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider's responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit.


Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Identify risks specific to women for cardiovascular disease and recognize risks specific to women military veterans
  2. Recognize Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (Broken Heart Syndrome) and understand why it is more prevalent in women than men
  3. Identify and implement strategies for secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease in women
  4. Be able to identify sex differences in the autonomic nervous system
  5. Perform early identification and treatment of women’s cardiovascular risk factors
