President Welcome
8:00AM - 8:10AM

A closer look at our paradigm: Suicidality through the lens of serious illness care
8:10AM - 9:10AM
Alexander Gamble, MD, FAAHPM (Speaker)

Objectives:

Examine the limitations of approaches to suicidal ideation in the traditionally siloed practices of Internal Medicine and Psychiatry

Formulate a conceptual framework of “Death Contemplation” as informed by the combined practice of Med/Psych and the lens of serious illness care

Evaluate implications for this conceptual framework to clinical practice and ongoing debates at the interface of mental health and serious illness care

Keynote: Integrative Approaches to Mental Health
9:15AM - 10:15AM
Tieraona Low Dog, MD, ABOIM (Speaker)

Mental health disorders are among the leading causes of disability worldwide, yet conventional approaches often focus narrowly on symptom management rather than whole-person healing. In this session, we will explore an integrative model for mental health that integrates conventional care with evidence informed nutrition, dietary supplements, mind-body therapies, and lifestyle interventions.

Objectives:
  • The science of stress and mood regulation: HPA axis, inflammation, neurotransmitters, and the gut–brain connection.

  • Nutrition and mental health: the role of diet quality, micronutrients, and omega-3 fatty acids in resilience and recovery.

  • Botanicals and supplements: evidence for adaptogens, nervines, and targeted nutraceuticals in depression, anxiety, and cognitive health.

  • Mind–body practices: meditation, breathwork, and movement as accessible tools for reducing stress and supporting emotional balance.

  • The therapeutic relationship: cultivating presence, listening, and motivation to empower patient engagement and adherence.

BREAK-Visit Exhibitors

Workshop: Medical Improv for Med-Psych Settings
10:35AM - 11:50AM
Zeina Saliba, MD (Speaker)
Joel Veenstra, M.F.A. (Speaker)

Medical improv, the application of improvisational theater techniques in healthcare, is increasingly recognized as a powerful tool to build communication, empathy, and adaptability among medical professionals. A growing body of literature supports its effectiveness in enhancing teamwork, emotional recognition, and flexibility in complex clinical settings. This workshop is experiential in nature: participants will learn by doing. Through improvisation games, reflective debriefs, and literature-informed discussion, participants will explore how improv can address challenges such as miscommunication, medical errors, and power dynamics in healthcare. Activities will be tailored to group size and designed to foster psychological safety, engagement, and collaboration.
Workshop: Beyond Opioid Dose Conversions: Advanced Topics in Palliative Care Pharmacology for the Internist-Psychiatrist
10:35AM - 11:50AM
Gregg Robbins-Welty, MD (Speaker)
Paul Noufi, MD (Speaker)
Morgan M Nakatani, MD (Speaker)

This interactive, case-based workshop goes beyond opioid conversions to explore advanced pharmacology for psychiatrists caring for seriously ill patients. Topics include opioid neurotoxicity and rotation, psychotropics as anti-emetics, appetite stimulation pitfalls, and benzodiazepine–opioid use in dyspnea. Internist-psychiatrists will leave with high-yield, clinically applicable insights to optimize collaboration and anticipate complications in complex symptom management.

Cesia Gonzalez, MS (Speaker)

Discussion regarding border health led by leaders at Refugee Health Alliance, a nonprofit organization which supports free medical care at the US-Mexico border for migrants and persons experiencing displacement. We strive for a world where everyone has the right to stay, move, and return in pursuit of health and wellness. We envision borderless communities where accessibility is universal. Grounded in the abolition of barriers, we aim to build a global community based on inclusivity, antiracism, holistic well-being, and justice. Please join us to learn more about how borders affect the health of this population.

3:20PM - 3:35PM
Claire K Meikle, MD, PhD (Speaker)

Patient WB is a 46-year-old Arabic speaking female from Mauritania with no significant medical or psychiatric history. WB’s case is the first documented case of a possible paraneoplastic psychiatric syndrome associated with granulosa cell tumor. The rarity of her diagnosis, language and cultural considerations, and severe psychiatric symptoms made diagnosis and treatment challenging. Combined trained physicians advocated for WB and her family on the inpatient psychiatry consults service and in the outpatient setting, communicated with WB and her family about medical and psychiatric symptoms and treatment, and collaborated with specialists to facilitate treatment. This case highlights the crucial skill set imparted by combined training, including diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric symptoms of medical illness, cultural sensitivity and patient centered care.

Case details, general features of outpatient capacity assessment, barriers to appropriate evaluation, and suggestions for changes to existing practice patterns are discussed.

Rhythms and Rest: Sleep and Mental Health in Women and Girls
4:00PM - 5:00PM
Katherine Sharkey, MD, PhD, FACP, FAASM, FAMWA (Speaker)

Sleep and circadian rhythms are critical to mental health, yet the ways they intersect with sex and gender are often underrecognized in clinical care. This talk will explore how biological rhythms and sleep physiology uniquely affect the mental health of women and girls, examine sleep disorders that disproportionately impact females, review sex and gender differences in clinical presentation and treatment response, and discuss implications for psychiatric assessment and intervention.

Objectives:

Define the terms circadian rhythm and sleep physiology as they relate to general mental health

Differentiate between the biological (sex-based) factors and social (gender-based) factors that contribute to sleep disorders disproportionately impacting females

Analyze the limitations of current psychiatric assessment tools when applied to female patients with underlying circadian rhythm disturbances.
